Four flavours of therapy
Our physiotherapists understand the complexity of the neuromuscular system and how neurological impairments impact on day to day efficiency of movement. An underlying philosophy of maintaining muscle length and joint range as well as monitoring effort, fatigue and promoting cardiovascular fitness is built into individual programmes. Abnormal movement including high tone, weakness and incoordination are addressed and a 24 hour approach to postural management enables physical gains to be maintained outside of therapy time.
Our occupational therapists specifically seek to improve functional and social capabilities. Emphasis is placed on using existing skills to optimise performance in everyday tasks. This includes social and vocational activities as well as looking at self-care routines and household tasks such as making meals, laundry and cleaning. Their role centres around creating meaningful change within a person’s chosen lifestyle, towards increased independence and improved quality of life.
Our speech and language therapists look at swallowing as well as communication skills. Swallowing is reviewed and interventions put in place to enable people to safely manage food and drink. Communication work looks at optimising respiratory support and positioning for speech output and specific voice work treatment. They may also review supportive communication, from low-tech solutions, such as letter boards and notepads to high- tech equipment, such as tablets or voice synthesis.
Our clinical neuropsychologists have particular expertise in working with people with cognitive and behavioural problems. Cognitive abilities such as planning, organisation, memory and concentration are looked at and strategies put in place to support performance. Behavioural problems including impulsivity, aggression and mood changes can be explored in the context of the person’s environment and realistic solutions put in place to reduce perceived stress, improve safety and relieve carer burden.
Our generic therapy assistants are central to the success of our rehabilitation programmes. They are highly skilled in supporting people to transfer techniques learnt in therapy into real life scenarios. We invest a huge amount of time in enabling our assistants to deliver defined therapy inputs within a safe governance framework. Working flexibly across all four flavours of therapy, our assistants ensure seamless carry over to consolidate effective outcomes.
