Speech and Language Therapy

speech and language therapy

Our Speech and Language Therapists focus on the main areas of expressing and receiving communication as well as the ability to orally manage food and swallow safely (dysphagia work). Our emphasis is focused more around communication with monitoring of swallowing and referral to Health Service resources where any significant changes or problems arise with dysphagia.

Communication work links with the work of our physiotherapists in areas around respiratory support and positioning for speech output and areas of focus are shared between speech therapy and neuropsychology in terms of verbal memory, reading ability, social communication and recognition skills involved in non-verbal communication.

Our speech therapists also deal with assistive communication devices, these can be low-tech (such as letter boards and notepads) or high tech (such as keyboards or ‘palm pilots’ with or without voice synthesis).

All of our therapists are registered with the Health Professions Council (HPC) and Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checked, in addition they undertake many hours of continuing professional development each year, much of which is supported by Neural Pathways.
